(and, of course, there are also down sides, like messing up a nice pair of pants). however, one of the benefits of waxing is not speed. a good wax job will actually slow your hull down.. Theoretically the smooth bottom boat (not even considering wax here) has more flat surface area on the bottom, while the scuffed bottom has more total surface area. the idea with the scuffed bottom is that air will hopefully get trapped in between the scratches and net a lower total surface area that contacts water..
The only step that takes any effort at all in the whole process is the removal of the wax after it’s dried. all in all, this step goes pretty quickly. now, for those concerned about wax versus no-wax racing surfaces, the bottom line is that a clean boat is the optimal hull surface for speed.. Care and maintenance of your maas shell. starboard side of the boat (left hand while rowing). it is etched in the gelcoat with an electric pencil about 6 – 8 inches from the end of the boat (but could be as far as 12”). apply one or two coats of a high quality wax or polish to seal the pores of the gelcoat after cleaning.. Mixes in the mekp and dissolves wax off the cup. the paraffin rises to the top of the repair sealing it off. you can also use candle wax shavings for the same effect. gelcoat is formulated so the surface remains tacky until the fiberglass and resin is applied when the boat is originally made..
